Honest review after 2 years at a Big 4 consulting firm in KL

by Ahmad ZikriยทMarch 3, 2026

Just left my Big 4 job last month after two years and wanted to share an honest take for those considering it.

The Good:
- Brand name on your CV opens a LOT of doors
- You learn fast โ€” probably faster than anywhere else
- Your colleagues are generally smart and fun to work with
- The training programmes are actually decent

The Reality:
- Work-life balance is a myth, especially during peak audit season. 9amโ€“12am was normal for me.
- Starting pay is around RM3,000โ€“3,500 for fresh grads, which honestly doesn't match the workload
- Senior-level turnover is very high โ€” good people keep leaving
- The promo cycle is slow unless you're really politically savvy

Bottom line: Do 2โ€“3 years to accumulate the brand name, skills, and network, then exit to industry. That's the standard playbook and it works.

Anyone else been through this? Would love to hear different experiences.

This matches my experience exactly. The brand name is real value โ€” I've had interviews where the hiring manager said 'oh, Big 4' and visibly relaxed. Exit to industry at the 2-year mark is definitely the move.

RM3,000โ€“3,500? That's being generous. I started at RM2,900 in 2022 audit. The pay is honestly embarrassing for the hours. Thank you for writing this for people considering it.

Counter-point: I stayed 4 years, made Senior Consultant, and the exit package to a CFO-track role at a listed company was worth the grind. Depends what you're building towards.

I completely agree with this! The culture shift is very noticeable.

Are you sure? I feel like it really depends on the department.

True, engineering is definitely better insulated from the corporate politics than sales.
