Toxic manager red flags during the interview โ€” learn from my mistake

by Priya SureshยทFebruary 28, 2026

Got burned badly by my last job. Looking back, ALL the signs were there during the interview. Sharing this so others can spot them early.

๐Ÿšฉ Red flags I missed:

1. They couldn't clearly explain the role. Asked "what does success look like in 90 days?" and got a vague non-answer.

2. They badmouthed the person who left. "The last person just couldn't handle the pressure." No accountability on their side at all.

3. The interview was rushed and disorganised. Nearly no questions about my actual skills โ€” just "can you start soon?"

4. No one from the team was in the interview. Only HR and the hiring manager. Huge red flag โ€” good teams want to meet potential colleagues.

5. High Glassdoor turnover signals. I checked after I joined. Several reviews mentioned the same manager by nickname.

Always do your research. Ask for a chat with a potential team member. Trust your gut in the interview room.

The 'no team member in the interview' one is so underrated as a red flag. I once insisted on a coffee chat with a potential teammate before accepting. Found out the team was miserable. Dodged a bullet.

Adding one more: if they pressure you to decide within 24 hours, that's almost always a sign they've had people turn them down and they're desperate. Good companies give you time.

The badmouthing the previous person one is so common. I never flagged it until I was in the job and my manager said the same things about me to other people. Clear pattern of behaviour.
