Internship at a fintech startup vs MNC bank โ€” which is better for CV?

by Nurul AinยทMarch 1, 2026

I have two internship offers and can only pick one:

Option A: 3-month internship at a Series B fintech startup. Real ownership, building actual features, RM1,200/month. Small team, no formal programme.

Option B: 6-month internship at a bulge bracket bank (think top 5 global). Structured rotational programme, networking events, RM800/month. Mostly shadow and report work based on what I hear.

I want to eventually go into product management or data science. Which actually looks better? And more importantly, which will I actually learn more from?

For PM/data science โ€” take the fintech startup 100%. The brand-name bank internship sounds good on paper but you'll spend 6 months making slides and sitting in compliance meetings. Startup will make you build real things.

I did both types. Startup internship gave me portfolio pieces I still talk about in interviews 4 years later. Bank internship gave me a name on my CV and not much else. For PM/data, portfolio > brand at this stage.

Also consider: 3 months at startup vs 6 months at bank. If you can extend the startup internship or line up something else afterwards, you get the best of both. Some startups are very open to extending good interns.
