Anyone else feel like LinkedIn is getting more toxic in Malaysia?

by Kevin YapยทMarch 4, 2026

Used to love checking LinkedIn. Now it feels like a mix of:

  • Humble brags disguised as "sharing my journey"
  • Completely made-up productivity advice (wake up at 4am, cold shower, journal, you'll be a CEO)
  • Fake viral posts written to farm engagement

I remember when it was just... a place to network and find jobs. Now it feels performative.

Is this just me? And for those who've found LinkedIn genuinely useful for their career in Malaysia โ€” what's your strategy? Do you post? What do you engage with?

LinkedIn in Malaysia has gotten extremely cringe. The 'I grew up poor and now I'm a director' posts are every other day. But โ€” I've also gotten 3 real job opportunities from it this year so I can't fully quit.

Strategy that works: post only actual insights from your work (anonymised), comment meaningfully on others' posts, DM people directly for coffees. Stopped posting motivational content โ€” engagement dropped but quality connections went up.

The algorithm now heavily rewards emotional storytelling, which is why everyone posts those arc narratives. It's not that people are more performative โ€” the platform just rewards it more than it used to.
