Is a Master's degree worth it in Malaysia right now? Honest takes only

by Alicia WongยทFebruary 27, 2026

I was all set to apply for a part-time Master's in Business at UM (RM35k total, 2 years). Then I started doubting myself.

Arguments FOR I've heard:
- Required for senior roles in some GLCs and government
- Academic/research career needs it
- Some employers still give an increment for postgrad

Arguments AGAINST I've heard:
- RM35k + 2 years of weekends vs just doing online courses and getting certs
- Most private sector doesn't care if you have experience
- MBA return-on-investment in Malaysia is much lower than in the US/SG

I work in marketing, 4 years experience, RM5,500/month. Would a Master's actually move the needle for me?

For marketing specifically โ€” no. A Master's won't move the needle nearly as much as a strong portfolio, measurable results (CAC, ROAS, pipeline growth), and a good network. Spend the RM35k on courses, tools, and experiences instead.

GLC and government sector is the exception. If you're targeting those environments, the Master's box is still real. But for private sector marketing? It's not going to change your trajectory.

The RM35k + 2 years of weekends cost is often underestimated. People forget the opportunity cost of those weekends โ€” side projects, freelance, or just recovering energy for Monday. Real cost is higher than the tuition.
