Why I left a 'fun' startup for a boring GLC — and don't regret it

by Rashdan Aziz·May 23, 2026

Two years ago I would have laughed at myself. The startup had ping pong tables, free snacks, and a rooftop. The GLC has beige carpets and a strict dress code.

Here's what changed my mind: at the startup, I was constantly firefighting with no systems, no budget, and a founder who changed direction every quarter. At the GLC, I actually have resources to execute, real mentors, and a team that's been here long enough to know what works.

The culture is slower and more hierarchical, yes. But I leave at 5:30 every day and my weekends are mine. Three years in and I've delivered projects that actually shipped. Don't let aesthetics fool you into thinking they equal culture.

Had the same experience. The team that looks happy at the interview might just be on best behaviour. Always find a way to talk to someone outside the room.

I once asked "what happened to the last person in this role?" and they all went quiet. Got my answer without an answer.

Glassdoor Malaysia is sparse but worth checking. Also LinkedIn — look at how long people stay at the company on average.
