CIMB culture review — the good, bad, and inter-department wars

by Patrick Chong·May 21, 2026

Three years across two divisions. This is as honest as I can be.

Good: The brand is strong, investment in training is real (the internal learning platform is actually used), and there's genuine effort on DEI that goes beyond the poster.

Frustrating: Cross-team alignment is painful. Different divisions run on different priorities and getting anything done that requires more than one team is an exercise in calendar management and soft politics.

Management quality: Varies enormously. I had one of the best managers of my career here, followed by a transfer to a team with one of the worst. The institution itself doesn't fully protect you from bad leadership.

Verdict: Good stepping stone, particularly if you land in the right team. Do your research on the specific division before accepting.

Annual bonus being discretionary is a red flag in the contract. Push for it to be formula-based so you can calculate it and hold them to it.

My company switched to quarterly performance bonuses and it changed behaviour in a good way. People aren't grinding for one big payout, they're consistently delivering.

Always read what "discretionary" means in the bonus clause. Some companies use it as an excuse to pay nothing even in profitable years.
