Toxic positivity in Malaysian workplaces — is anyone else exhausted by it?

by Salmah Razak·May 27, 2026

"Great job team!" after a product launch that had three critical bugs. "We're all in this together!" during a round of layoffs with no severance discussion. "Stay positive!" when you raise a legitimate concern.

Toxic positivity isn't just annoying — it's dangerous. It signals that there's no space for honest feedback, which means real problems go unaddressed until they become crises.

I think it's particularly common in Malaysian workplaces because of a cultural pressure to maintain harmony and not be seen as difficult. But there's a difference between being respectful and being dishonest about reality.

How do you handle this in your own teams or with your managers?

Medical benefits that exclude dental and optical feel incomplete in 2025. These are basic healthcare — should be standard.

I negotiated a flexible medical allowance instead of panel clinic access and it was much better. I could go to my own doctor.

Corporate medical cards are often limited by panel. The good ones let you go anywhere and claim. Know what yours covers before you need it.
