What actually makes a good manager in Malaysia? Let's collect real answers

by Preethi Kumari·May 23, 2026

I've had 7 managers in 8 years of working. Two were genuinely great. The rest ranged from mediocre to actively harmful.

What made the two great ones stand out had nothing to do with seniority or technical skill. Both of them: gave credit publicly and feedback privately, were honest about what they didn't know, and actively removed blockers rather than creating them.

I want to hear from others: what has a great Malaysian manager done that made a real difference to your work or growth? Specific examples are more useful than abstract qualities. I'll compile the answers.

Job hopping stigma is fading fast especially in tech. Recruiters who still judge a 2-year tenure are behind the times.

Data point: I went from RM 4,200 to RM 9,000 in four moves over five years. Loyalty bonus at one company was RM 200. You do the math.

The counter is also true — some people hop too fast and never deepen expertise. Sweet spot is 2–3 years per role ideally.
