My experience working at a Japanese company in Malaysia — culture clash was real

by Yuki Mizuno·May 16, 2026

Joined thinking it would be structured and efficient. Both true, but with some surprises I wasn't prepared for.

Decision-making: Everything goes through consensus (ringi process). A decision that would take 3 hours at a startup can take 3 weeks. Frustrating but once made, execution is very aligned.

Hierarchy: More rigid than most Malaysian companies. Addressing a Japanese senior executive directly, without going through your manager first, is genuinely uncomfortable for them.

Work ethic: The Japanese team ethic around not leaving before your superior is real. On days when the Japanese expats stay late, the local team feels the pressure even if nothing is said.

The upside: Quality standards are very high. You learn to care about details you might otherwise skip. I left with better work habits.

Flexible hours are the salary increment I needed most. Saving 90 minutes of commute daily is genuinely life-changing.

I traded a RM 500 salary bump for a WFH allowance and better hours. Net value was much higher when you factor in petrol, parking, and food.

Learning budget is underestimated. RM 3,000 annual upskilling allowance is worth more than RM 3,000 cash if you use it on certifications that boost your market rate.
