Behavioural interview questions Malaysian companies love — and how to actually answer them

by Serena Yong·May 25, 2026

After going through 20+ interviews this year, these are the questions that keep coming up. With notes on what interviewers are actually assessing.

"Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager."
They want to know if you can handle conflict professionally. Don't say you've never disagreed — that's not credible. Give a real example and focus on how you resolved it with data and respect.

"Describe a time you failed."
They're testing self-awareness and learning. The failure matters less than what you did next and what you changed.

"How do you handle multiple deadlines at once?"
Give a specific example with the tools or system you use. "I prioritise" is not an answer.

"Why are you leaving your current company?"
Stay positive. "I'm looking for growth" is fine. "My manager is terrible" is not, even if true.

Use the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for all of these — it keeps you on track and makes your answers easy to evaluate.

My internship allowance was RM 600 in KL. After transport and lunch, I was spending more than I earned. Fairer minimum is long overdue.

Some companies pay RM 1,500–2,000 for interns and get the best students. They're not losing money — they're investing in talent pipelines.

Internship allowance should at minimum cover cost of living in that city. Anything less is exploitative, full stop.
