Questions you must ask before accepting a job offer โ€” the ones that actually matter

by Aiman ShariffยทMay 24, 2026

Most people ask surface-level questions in interviews. Here are the ones that reveal whether you actually want this job.

On the role:
- "What does success look like for someone in this role after 6 months?"
- "What are the biggest challenges the team is currently facing?"

On the team:
- "How long have the people I'd be working directly with been here?"
- "How does the team handle disagreement or setbacks?"

On the company:
- "What's the plan for this team's growth over the next 2 years?"
- "How are decisions made when priorities conflict across teams?"

On the manager (most important):
- "How do you typically give feedback to your team?"
- "What do you wish you'd known when you joined the company?"

The answers to these questions tell you far more than the job description ever will.

Best interview prep for internships: build something and put it on GitHub. A live project beats a GPA number for tech companies.

Practice answering "tell me about a time you solved a problem with limited resources." Every internship interviewer asks a version of this.

LinkedIn connections during internship applications is underrated. Reaching out to a hiring manager with a personalised note converted to an interview for me.
