'Walk me through your resume' — what interviewers actually want to hear

by Rebecca Foo·May 22, 2026

This question feels like a gift but most people use it wrong. They literally read their CV back out loud. That's not what the interviewer wants.

What they actually want:
- A coherent narrative: why did you make each major move?
- What you learned and what you're building toward
- Confidence and clarity, can you represent yourself well?

What good looks like:
"I started in X because [reason]. After Y years I moved to Z because I wanted to develop [skill/experience]. That led me to [current role] where I've been focused on [key area]. I'm looking at this opportunity because it aligns with where I'm heading, specifically [connection to role]."

What not to do:
- Don't apologise for gaps or switches, just explain them simply
- Don't recite bullet points, tell a story
- Don't go longer than 3 minutes, it's a prompt, not a presentation

Corporate internships have structure and brand name. Startup internships have ownership and range. Both are valuable — know which you need at this stage.

I interned at a startup where the "intern project" became a core feature. My code is still in production. Startups give you real ownership.

Corporate gave me the process knowledge and the network. Startup gave me the confidence to ship things. I'd recommend doing both across a degree.
