My McKinsey Malaysia interview experience — step by step breakdown

by Shahila Zuber·May 20, 2026

Applied, got through, didn't get the offer, but learned a lot. Sharing because there's very little Malaysia-specific content about this process.

Round 1: Two case interviews, 45 minutes each. Both interviewers were Associates. Cases were Malaysia-market focused, retail expansion and a cost reduction exercise for a local manufacturer. Standard McKinsey case format.

Round 2 (final): One case with a Partner + personal experience interview ("PEI"). The PEI focuses on leadership, entrepreneurship, and impact. They want specific stories, not generalities. Prepare 5–6 detailed stories you can adapt to different questions.

What caught me off guard: The ambiguity. They give you almost no data initially, you have to ask for it. That's intentional.

Prep resources that helped: RocketBlocks for case practice, the McKinsey Problem Solving Test prep materials, and a study partner I found through a university alumni group.

Remote internships work for analytical roles. For anything requiring hands-on or in-person collaboration, the intern loses a lot of learning opportunities.

Had a fully remote internship. Got the project done but felt disconnected from the company culture. Would have preferred hybrid for the social element.

For interns, being physically present in the office creates organic learning moments — overhearing decisions, joining impromptu meetings, asking questions in context.
