How to follow up after an interview without being annoying โ€” template included

by Damien ChungยทMay 26, 2026

The follow-up email is one of the most underused tools in job hunting. It keeps you top of mind and signals genuine interest. Here's the format that's worked for me.

Send it within 24 hours:

Subject: Thank you โ€” [Role] interview on [Date]

"Hi [Name],

Thank you for the time today. I particularly enjoyed our discussion about [specific topic from interview] โ€” it reinforced my interest in [specific aspect of role or company].

[Optional: One-sentence additional thought or relevant experience you didn't cover well in the interview.]

Looking forward to next steps.

[Your name]"

If you haven't heard back by the date they gave you: One follow-up email is appropriate. Two maximum. After that, move on โ€” they have your contact.

Don't: Call HR repeatedly, connect on LinkedIn without context, or send long emails explaining why you're perfect for the role.

Generalist vs specialist is a false binary early career. Go deep in one thing and broad in adjacent areas. T-shaped skills open more doors.

The generalist trap is being mediocre at everything. Specialise first, then broaden once you have credibility in one domain.

Industry matters as much as role. A mediocre person in a fast-growing industry does better than an excellent person in a declining one. Choose the environment.
