GLC interview process decoded โ€” PETRONAS, Khazanah-linked companies, and morE

by Nor FaezahยทMay 22, 2026

GLC interviews have a distinct character that's worth understanding before you walk in.

Common format: Multi-stage processes with a written test or assessment centre component. PETRONAS, for example, uses a Problem Solving Test (similar to McKinsey PST format) and technical assessments for engineering roles. Management trainee programmes often include group discussions and presentations.

What's valued: Communication in both English and Bahasa Malaysia matters. Cultural fit questions about national development, community, and long-term commitment come up more often than in private sector.

Timeline: Expect it to take longer. A GLC hiring process that takes 4โ€“6 months is not unusual. Private sector timelines average 3โ€“6 weeks.

Salary negotiation: Less flexible than private sector โ€” most GLCs have band structures with limited room to negotiate above the band. Benefits, however, are often non-negotiable and strong.

I got promoted by documenting my wins in real time. Every quarter I sent my manager a one-pager of what I shipped and its impact. Promotions followed.

The biggest mistake is assuming good work speaks for itself. It doesn't. You need to make your contributions visible รƒยขรขโ€šยฌโ€ diplomatically but consistently.

Ask your manager explicitly: "what would I need to demonstrate to be promoted to the next level?" Get it in writing. Then do exactly that.
