WFH tax relief in Malaysia — what you can claim that most people miss

by Hafizal Jamal·May 24, 2026

The government introduced WFH-related tax relief categories that a lot of people aren't fully utilising. Here's a summary for YA 2024 (verify with LHDN or a tax consultant for latest figures).

Equipment relief: Purchase of personal computer, smartphone, or tablet — up to RM2,500 per individual (once every 3 years).

Internet subscription: Broadband fees are claimable up to RM2,500 under the lifestyle relief category, which also covers sports equipment and reading materials.

Monthly internet bill is the big one. If your monthly internet is RM149/month = RM1,788/year. All of that is claimable. Most people who WFH are not claiming this.

Note: These relief amounts and categories change year to year. The LHDN MyTax portal and HASiL website have the official guides. If your income is above RM100,000, consider a qualified tax consultant — the relief optimisation often pays for the consultation fee.

The Malaysian festive season office decoration arms race is a real phenomenon. Someone always escalates. I respect the commitment.

Best open house I attended was hosted by a Malay colleague who genuinely made everyone feel welcome regardless of religion or race. That's the spirit.

The CNY hamper competition at my company is legendary. Marketing department goes overboard every year. We have a champion.
