Switching from 100% office to 100% remote — the adjustment no one prepares you for
by Bobby Singh·May 23, 2026
Left a traditional office role for a fully remote company. Six months in, here's what I'd tell myself on day one.
The productivity adjustment is real — but not the direction you expect. I became more productive, not less. No commute, fewer interruptions, able to deep work for 3-hour blocks. But I also had to learn when to stop. The office physically separates work from home; remote doesn't.
Written communication is a skill. In the office I could tap someone on the shoulder. Now, if I write a unclear Slack message, it creates confusion that takes 2 hours to untangle. The quality of my async writing had to improve significantly.
Visibility has to be intentional. At the office you're passively visible. Remote means you can deliver great work and no one notices because the signals aren't there. I had to learn to share updates, document decisions, and be deliberately present in the channels where visibility matters.
