Do remote jobs in Malaysia actually pay less? Let's compare real numbers

by Felix Yap·May 22, 2026

I've been tracking this informally for a year, looking at job postings and talking to people in similar roles.

My findings (tech roles, primarily):
- Fully remote Malaysian companies: salary ranges comparable to or slightly below in-office equivalents
- International remote companies (paying in USD/SGD): typically 30–80% more than local market rates for similar roles
- Hybrid roles: essentially the same as full in-office, the hybrid element doesn't seem to command a premium or discount

Why the gap with international remote:
If a Singapore or US company is hiring remotely, they're already expanding their talent pool. The right Malaysian candidate at local market rates is often still cheaper than their local equivalent, even with the exchange rate premium.

The actual play: get a role with an international remote company paying in a stronger currency. This is increasingly possible in engineering, design, and product roles.

Adobe Express has caught up significantly. For teams already in the Creative Cloud ecosystem, switching to Canva is not always worth the retraining cost.
