Big 4 internship vs boutique consulting โ€” honest comparison from someone who did both

by Roshan NairยทMay 21, 2026

Did both in different years of study.

Big 4 internship:
- Brand recognition is immediately valuable
- Structured programme with an intern cohort, good network
- Work is real but you're one of many, less individual ownership
- Learning is broad: multiple clients and industries
- Allowance: typically RM800โ€”1,200/month

Boutique consulting internship:
- Less brand name unless the boutique is well-known
- More ownership, I wrote client deliverables that went out under my supervisor's name
- Faster feedback loops and more direct mentoring
- Learning is deeper but narrower (usually one sector)
- Allowance: RM1,000โ€”2,000 but varies widely

Bottom line: Big 4 for network and doors. Boutique for depth and real work earlier. Both are legitimate, the right choice depends on where you want to go.

The Malaysian government mental health hotline Befrienders KL is 03-7627 2929. Available 24 hours. More people should know about this.

SOLS Health has affordable online therapy options in Malaysia. RM 150โ€”200 per session is still a lot but much less than private clinical rates.

My employer EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) includes 6 free therapy sessions per year. Most employees don't know it exists. HR communication failure.
