TikTok Malaysia internship โ€” not what I expected going in

by Wendy FooยทMay 25, 2026

Joined expecting startup chaos. Got something much more structured.

TikTok Malaysia operates with more process than most people assume. There's a proper onboarding, an assigned mentor, and a project brief with actual milestones. It felt more like a large MNC than a scrappy startup.

The work is real. I worked on a creator analytics project that shipped to the Creator Marketplace team.

The pace is genuinely fast. Some early morning calls due to China alignment. This is cultural to ByteDance and affects interns too.

Compensation: RM2,200/month for tech interns. Above market for Malaysia.

Culture is young (mostly late 20s to mid-30s) and international. Your colleagues might be from KL, Jakarta, or Singapore.

The hardest thing I did in my career was tell my director I needed to step back from a project for mental health reasons. He was more understanding than I expected. Most people are.

You don't owe your employer your mental health. If the environment is making you unwell, that information matters more than loyalty.

Document everything when dealing with a hostile manager. Not because you want to sue โ€” but because gaslighting is easier to deflect when you have a record.
