Maybank internship โ€” Capital Markets vs Retail Banking division comparison

by Terence LohยทMay 23, 2026

Applied to both, accepted Capital Markets. Here's my experience and what I heard from a friend in Retail.

Capital Markets (my experience):
- Exposure to deals, pitchbooks, financial modelling
- Fast-paced and sometimes intimidating โ€” excellent learning
- Less hand-holding โ€” expected to figure things out
- Longer hours during deal periods
- Best for those targeting IB, capital markets, or finance careers

Retail Banking (friend's experience):
- Structured rotation โ€” branches, operations, digital team
- Better work-life balance for an intern
- Broader exposure to the full bank
- Best for commercial banking, relationship management, or GLC corporate roles

Allowance: Comparable across both at RM1,200โ€”1,500/month.

Which to choose depends entirely on your career direction.

Imposter syndrome hit hardest when I was actually doing well. The better I performed, the more I feared being "found out." Therapy helped me see the pattern.

The cure for imposter syndrome is not confidence โ€” it's evidence. Keep a document of compliments, wins, and feedback. Read it when doubt hits.

Imposter syndrome is more common in high achievers. If you didn't care about doing well, you wouldn't fear being exposed as not doing well. It's a twisted compliment.
