Internship in Singapore vs Malaysia — real comparison for Malaysian students

by Ezra Lim·May 19, 2026

Did one in each country across two summers.

Compensation:
Singapore internships typically pay SGD900—2,000/month. At current rates, that's RM3,000—7,000+. Malaysian equivalents in similar sectors: RM800—2,000. The gap is significant.

Living costs in Singapore:
Accommodation alone is SGD600—900/month for a shared room. Net it out and you're still ahead, but not by as much as the gross suggests.

Career signalling:
For Malaysian employers, a Singapore MNC internship signals well. The brand names travel.

Learning:
Depends more on the company than the country. I learned more in my Malaysian internship because the work ownership was higher.

Should you try for Singapore? If the compensation gap matters and you can manage the logistics: yes. Don't chase it purely for prestige if you have better actual work available locally.

The language of business in Malaysia is shifting to English in tech but Bahasa Malaysia fluency still matters deeply in government, education, and healthcare sectors.

Mandarin fluency is a legitimate competitive advantage in Malaysian business. If you're a non-Chinese Malaysian who speaks functional Mandarin, doors open.

Japanese and Korean are useful for manufacturing and automotive. Many Japanese MNCs in Malaysia appreciate Nihongo even at conversational level.
