How do Malaysian workers actually spend their annual leave? Sharing minE

by Zulaika Halim·May 25, 2026

Curious what the reality is vs what people say. My honest breakdown for last year:

  • 5 days: actual holidays (Bali trip with family)
  • 4 days: medical/MC days I didn't take leave for separately
  • 3 days: weddings and family events
  • 3 days: used to extend public holidays into long weekends
  • 1 day: genuinely needed a mental health day

Total: 16 days used of my 18-day entitlement. I did not fully utilise my leave and looking back, I should have taken more proper rest.

What's your breakdown? Especially curious whether people genuinely use leave for rest or whether it gets consumed by obligations.

Raya packet politics at work is a real phenomenon. If you give to some and not others, you've created a problem. Standard practice: give or don't, no in-between.

The best part of CNY at work is the office lo sang. The collective shouting during the toss is genuinely cathartic stress relief.

Deepavali kolam competition organised by our office became the highlight of Q4. Non-Indian colleagues were the most enthusiastic participants.
