Workplace friendships that turned into business partnerships โ€” sharing my story

by Maggie SooยทMay 25, 2026

Met my current business partner at a previous employer. We worked in adjacent teams, stayed friends after we both left, and eventually started a small agency together.

Here's what made the friendship transferable to a business partnership:
- We had seen each other under work pressure before and knew how the other person operated
- We had complementary skills rather than identical ones (I'm client-facing, he's ops and finance)
- We had a genuine honest dynamic โ€” could tell each other uncomfortable things without it becoming personal

What didn't come naturally: separating the friendship from the business when we had to make hard calls. We had to deliberately create structures (decision frameworks, equity documents, clear role separation) that friends don't usually need.

The friendship survived. The business is 3 years in. I'm glad we took the risk but I would caution anyone that the structure matters as much as the trust.

I read during lunch for 20 minutes daily. Finished 14 books last year without sacrificing any personal or work time. Compound habit.

The book that most changed how I work: Deep Work by Cal Newport. Reading it once isn't enough โ€” it's a re-read annually type of book.

National Library Malaysia membership is free and their e-book platform Overdrive is genuinely useful. Zero cost to read widely as a Malaysian.
