Is it okay to follow your boss on Instagram? Asking seriously

by Sarah Alias·May 21, 2026

This came up in a conversation with colleagues and we all had different opinions. Genuinely curious what people think and do.

The case for: shows you're a normal human being with a life, can humanise the relationship, might get you an insight into what they care about

The case against: it blurs professional and personal boundaries in a way that's hard to undo, you might see things you can't unsee, they might feel obligated to follow back

My current policy: I follow managers on LinkedIn (always), never initiate on Instagram. If they follow me first, I follow back.

Does this vary by company culture, age of manager, or type of relationship you have with them? What's your actual practice?

The weather forecast becoming a whole-team conversation during monsoon season is uniquely Malaysian workplace bonding.

The flood preparedness reminder email from HR every October is both necessary and slightly alarming. Welcome to working in Klang Valley.

Working from home during monsoon floods in KL was the original WFH stress test before COVID. We had the infrastructure because of necessity.
