Work anniversary gifts from companies โ€” what has your experience been?

by Tommy LeongยทMay 20, 2026

Just hit 5 years at my current company and received a certificate and a pen.

Not ungrateful. The certificate is framed. But it did make me think about what actually makes people feel valued at work anniversaries.

Stories from colleagues:
- One person got a handwritten note from the CEO at their 3-year mark and described it as the most meaningful recognition they'd received at work. Cost: RM0.
- Another got a RM500 shopping voucher at year 5 that felt transactional and was forgotten within a week.
- A third had their team organise a surprise lunch. They still talk about it 4 years later.

The pattern in the stories that land is specificity and personalisation, something that shows the company noticed who this specific person is, not just that someone reached a milestone.

What's the most or least meaningful work anniversary recognition you've received?

I took up photography seriously during the pandemic and it became my stress regulator. Quarterly photo walks with colleagues have become a tradition.

The colleague who paints miniature figures for tabletop games is always the one with the most patience and the clearest thinking in meetings. There's a correlation.

Having a creative outlet completely unrelated to your job keeps you sane in a way that "more rest" doesn't. Making something with your hands resets the brain.
