Therapy in Malaysia — stigma, access, and actual costs broken down

by Sarah Ng·May 25, 2026

I started therapy 18 months ago after pretending I didn't need it for much longer. Here's what I wish I'd known.

The stigma: Real but generational. My parents' generation largely sees it as something for people who are "crazy" or "weak." My peer group is more open. I told close friends I was going and it opened three separate conversations about their own experiences.

Finding a therapist in Malaysia:
- The Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) has a directory
- Naluri and ThoughtFull are Malaysian-based apps with licensed therapists
- Ask your GP — some clinics have in-house counsellors or reliable referral lists

Cost:
- Private psychologist: RM150—350/hour
- Private counsellor: RM80—180/hour
- Government hospital psychiatry: RM5—30/session but very long waiting lists
- Some employers include EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) with free sessions — check your benefits

Does it work? Yes, if you find the right person. The first therapist I tried wasn't a good fit. The second one was.

I applied to Stanford OCI (online cohort initiative) and got in. Malaysian students are often discouraged from applying to US schools — the imposter syndrome starts before the application.

The Chevening scholarship for UK is the most underused scholarship in Malaysia proportional to eligibility. The application window is September—November yearly.

MARA scholarship for overseas study is still operating but much narrower in scope than the 1990s era. Competition is high and the bond period is significant. Worth it for the right person.
