Free and low-cost mental health resources in Malaysia — compiled list

Building this list for people who need support but can't afford private therapy. Please add to it.

Free hotlines:
- Befrienders KL: 03-7627 2929 (24 hours, emotional support)
- MIASA Helpline: 1800-82-0066 (mental illness support)
- Talian Kasih: 15999 (family and social issues)

Low-cost counselling:
- University counselling centres often offer low-fee sessions to the public
- MMHA (Malaysian Mental Health Association) has a subsidised fee structure
- Government hospital outpatient psychiatry: RM1 per visit with referral (long wait, but free)

Apps (free or freemium):
- Moodgym: cognitive behavioural therapy exercises
- Intellect: Malaysian-made mental wellness app, free tier is useful
- Woebot: AI-guided CBT exercises (free)

Self-help resources: The MMHA website has a library of guides in both English and Bahasa Malaysia on anxiety, depression, and burnout that are written for a Malaysian audience.
