Coursera vs Udemy vs LinkedIn Learning — honest comparison for Malaysian professionals

by Winnie Goh·May 24, 2026

Used all three seriously over the past 2 years. Here's where each works.

Coursera:
- Best for: structured certificate programmes that have employer recognition (Google Career Certificates, IBM, Meta professional certs)
- Audit most courses for free — you only pay if you want the certificate
- The certificate from Google Data Analytics or similar has genuine value in Malaysian job markets
- Price: RM150—200/month for Plus, or single course certificates at RM350—600

Udemy:
- Best for: specific technical skills quickly. The best courses (look for high ratings, 100k+ students) are very good
- Never pay full price — Udemy runs sales constantly and courses drop to RM30—50
- No prestige from the certificate but the skills are real

LinkedIn Learning:
- Best for: soft skills, business skills, quick topic overviews
- Weak for deep technical learning
- Often bundled free with LinkedIn Premium

My recommendation: Coursera for certificate value, Udemy for technical skills, LinkedIn Learning for quick overviews.

Bumiputera quotas in hiring are a reality in certain companies. Understanding the landscape helps you target applications more strategically. Not all companies have the same requirements.

The requirement to write "Expected Salary" on Malaysian application forms is ripe for reform. Applicants who know the band negotiate better and there's less wasted interview time.

Photo on resume: in Malaysia it's still the norm despite best practices elsewhere. Check what the industry expects and adjust accordingly for your target sector.
