Public speaking for Malaysian introverts — what actually worked for mE

by Ivan Chung·May 21, 2026

I am deeply, constitutionally introverted. I also have to present to leadership quarterly and run client workshops. HerE's how I got functional at something that doesn't come naturally.

What helped, actually:

Toastmasters Malaysia. I went every two weeks for 8 months. It's low-stakes practice in a supportive environment. The structured feedback is genuinely useful. Most importantly: you practice regularly enough that the mechanics become less effortful.

Preparation as confidence substitute. I can't perform extroversion, but I can prepare so thoroughly that I don't need to. Knowing my material so well that I could give the talk without slides takes the cognitive load away and frees up mental bandwidth for presence.

Reframing from "performing" to "sharing." I'm not trying to entertain. I'm sharing something I understand well with people who want to learn it. This shift removed most of the performance anxiety.

What I don't do: Try to be charming or energetic. I'm clear, structured, and knowledgeable. That's enough.

I job-searched while employed by taking all my interviews during lunch. 1-hour slots, nearby cafes for in-person, phone in my car for calls. Managed 3 months without anyone knowing.

The ethical line: don't use company time or resources for your job search. Your laptop, your data, and your working hours should stay clean.

References from your current employer while still employed is the trickiest part. Build a relationship with former managers who can vouch for you without the current company knowing.
