PMP certification in Malaysia — is it still worth it in 2025?

by Fadziah Nordin·May 24, 2026

Just passed my PMP in February. Here's an honest answer to whether the investment was worthwhile.

The exam: Significantly harder than the old version. PMI moved to a hybrid Predictive/Agile/Hybrid format in 2021 and the exam is genuinely challenging. Don't underestimate it.

Preparation:
- Study hours needed: 100—150 hours is realistic
- Best resources: Agile Practice Guide (free from PMI for members), Andrew Ramdayal's Udemy course (highly recommended by community), and the official PMBOK guide for reference
- Exam prep cost total: roughly RM1,500—2,500 including exam fee and study materials

Is it worth it in Malaysia?
For project management roles in GLCs, government, and large corporate environments: yes. The PMP is specifically requested in job postings.
For tech companies and startups: less relevant. They typically prefer practical agile/scrum experience over a certification.

Salary impact: Anecdotally, colleagues who got PMP report RM500—1,500/month premium in salary negotiations in corporate environments.

Fresh graduates who negotiate salary are rare but successful. Research thoroughly, have your number ready, and ask confidently. The worst they can say is no.

The first job salary is the anchor for the next 3 years. Starting 15% lower than market means your subsequent raises are calculated from a lower base. Negotiate hard at the start.

Internship convert offers are often low because companies know you're comfortable there. The comfort is used against you. Research external benchmarks before accepting.
