Content creator income in Malaysia — what the real numbers look likE

by Ikhwan Hariz·May 26, 2026

I've been creating content for 3 years and know a lot of other creators. HerE's an honest picture of the income landscape.

YouTube (Malaysia-based audience):
RPM (revenue per 1000 views) for Malaysia is RM3—8. Compare to US at RM40—80. A 100k views video earns roughly RM300—800 in ad revenue here.

Instagram / TikTok (branded content):
This is where the real money is for most Malaysian creators. A 50k follower Instagram account in a lifestyle niche can earn RM500—2,000 per post from brand deals. Highly niche accounts (finance, parenting, career) sometimes command more despite smaller audiences.

The math most people miss:
A full-time content creator income (RM5,000+/month) typically requires either: 500k+ followers in a mass niche, or 20—50k followers in a high-value niche with strong brand relationships.

The realistic entry point: Most Malaysian creators earn RM0—500/month for the first 1—2 years. This is normal.

I transitioned from corporate marketing to independent consultant by taking on one project on the side for 6 months. Proved the income was replaceable before quitting.

The first year of freelancing felt chaotic. Year 2 felt like I was finding rhythm. Year 3 is when it started feeling like a career rather than an experiment.

Going back to employment from freelancing is not failure — it's a data point. I went back for 18 months, rebuilt my savings, and relaunched with a better business model.
