From employee to sole proprietor — registering your business in Malaysia step by step

by Farhan Ahmad·May 23, 2026

Did this last year when my freelance income became consistent enough to formalise. Here's the actual process.

Sole proprietor (enterprise) registration via SSM:
1. Go to ezBiz.ssm.com.my (can do it fully online)
2. Choose a business name — you can use your own name (Name + Enterprise) or a trading name
3. Select your business activity code (MSIC code — find the one closest to your work)
4. Pay RM30—60 registration fee
5. Registration is completed within 1—3 working days

What registration gives you:
- A business registration number (useful for opening a business bank account and issuing professional invoices)
- Ability to deduct business expenses from taxable income
- More credible appearance to clients, especially corporate clients who need a business entity to make payments

After registration:
- Open a business bank account (Maybank, CIMB, and most banks have a simple sole proprietor account)
- Register for SST if your annual revenue exceeds RM500,000 (most small freelancers don't reach this)

Cost: RM30—60 and about 2 hours of your time.

The self-employment income tax calculation in Malaysia: net income after allowable deductions taxed at individual rates. Keep records because LHDN audits freelancers more than employees.

Form B vs Form BE: self-employed file Form B, employees file Form BE. Mix them up and you'll have a messy audit situation. Know which form is yours.

The RM 9,000 lifestyle relief for computing equipment is claimable if you use it for work. Most freelancers don't claim this. Read the LHDN guidelines carefully.
