How I went from side hustle to full-time freelance in 18 months — the actual plan

by Aneesa Koh·May 21, 2026

This wasn't a leap, it was a staircase.

Month 1—6 (side hustle phase):
Took on small freelance projects evenings and weekends. Said yes to everything to build a portfolio and testimonials. Deliberately undercharged at this stage to remove the price barrier for initial clients.

Month 7—12 (validation phase):
Consistently earning RM2,000—3,000/month on the side. Raised my rates. Started getting referrals. Identified which types of projects I wanted to focus on.

Month 13—15 (transition planning):
Built 3 months of living expenses in savings. Had 2 anchor clients who wanted ongoing work. Gave my employer 2 months notice.

Month 16—18 (full-time freelance):
Month 16 was RM4,200. Month 17 was RM6,800. Month 18 was RM7,500.

Key principle: Don't quit your job on hope. Quit on evidence. Evidence means: multiple clients, demonstrated ability to acquire new clients, and a financial buffer.

My anxiety about returning to office full-time after 2 years WFH was real and valid. My commute stress came back instantly. The adjustment took 6 weeks.

Hybrid anxiety is the new thing, always wondering if you're missing something when working from home, always resenting the commute when you go in. Needs active management.

The anxiety cycle: working from home → fear of being invisible → overwork to compensate → exhaustion → anxiety. Name the cycle to break it.
