Pricing your freelance services in Malaysia — how to stop undercharging
by Yumi Rashid·May 24, 2026
Most Malaysian freelancers I know undercharge. I did for 2 years. Here's the framework that helped me fix it.
The comparison trap: Don't price based on what other Malaysian freelancers charge. That's a race to the bottom because some are also undercharging.
Value-based pricing: What is the outcome of your work worth to the client? A logo that helps a company look credible enough to win a contract worth RM50,000 is not worth RM300.
The rate formula I use:
- Calculate what you need to earn per month (including taxes, no-EPF, no-benefits penalty, slow months)
- Divide by billable hours (not total hours — admin, marketing, etc. are not billable)
- That's your minimum hourly rate
- Add a premium for your expertise and specialisation
A test: If a client accepts your price instantly without any negotiation, you're too cheap.
On the "Malaysia market" excuse: Some clients will say the market rate in Malaysia is lower. Some clients are right. But many are using this to extract a discount. Know the difference.
