Getting your first freelance client when you have no portfolio and no reputation

by Juliana Musa·May 24, 2026

Everyone says "build a portfolio first." But you need clients to build a portfolio. Here's how to break the cycle.

Strategy 1: Offer free or heavily discounted work to 2—3 people you know.
Not strangers — people in your network who run small businesses or have a project. Do excellent work. Ask for a testimonial. This is your portfolio.

Strategy 2: Productise a small offering.
Instead of "I'm a designer, hire me," offer "I'll redesign your LinkedIn profile photo and banner for RM150." Small, specific, easy to say yes to. Do 10 of these and you have a portfolio and testimonials.

Strategy 3: Contribute publicly.
Answer questions in Facebook groups or Reddit related to your skill. People with problems that you've publicly demonstrated you can solve will reach out.

Strategy 4: Go hyper-local.
Small businesses in your neighbourhood or community have real needs and often can't access good freelancers. Introduce yourself in person. This is old-fashioned and works.

Grief in the workplace is rarely accommodated well. Three days compassionate leave for a parent is inadequate. The emotional processing continues long after the leave ends.

Major life transitions — divorce, serious illness, new baby — affect work performance significantly. Companies that build flexibility around life transitions retain their best people.

I used my personal leave for therapy appointments for 2 years before my company introduced a dedicated mental wellness day. The change meant I could use my personal leave for actual rest.
