Time management when juggling a full-time job and a side hustle — my system

by Azwan Bahari·May 26, 2026

I work 9-to-6 at a corporate job and run a freelance writing business on the side. Here's the system that lets me do both without burning out.

The non-negotiables I protect:
- 7 hours of sleep (this is a ceiling, not a floor)
- Exercise 3x per week
- Sunday completely off

Time blocks for the side hustle:
- 7:00—8:30am: Deep freelance work before the day job brain kicks in
- Lunch break (30 min): Admin tasks, emails, quick edits
- 8:00—10:00pm: Longer projects when the day job is quieter

What I say no to:
- Clients who need turnaround times I can't deliver without sacrificing sleep
- Social commitments on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (those are protected work nights)
- Projects that pay low and require high coordination overhead

The system check: Monthly, I look at whether the side hustle income justifies the time it's taking. If the hourly rate drops below RM100 due to scope creep or low-margin clients, something has to change.

Mental health conversations are starting to happen at Malaysian board level, driven by ESG reporting requirements. External pressure is creating internal change. I'll take it.

The talent war of the next decade will be won by companies that are genuinely humane workplaces. Mental health investment is not charity — it's competitive strategy.

I stay at my company because of how they treated me when I was going through a hard personal time. That loyalty was earned, not demanded. That's what good culture looks like.
