I got hired for a role I wasn't qualified for on paper — herE's how

by Izzul Hakim·May 20, 2026

The job description asked for 7+ years of experience. I had 4. I applied anyway and got the offer. Here's what happened.

Why I applied:
The skills listed were things I had done extensively, even if my years were fewer. Experience requirements are often aspirational rather than minimum.

What I did differently in my application:
- Addressed the experience gap directly in my cover letter: "I bring 4 years of direct experience rather than 7, and I'd like to explain why I believe the quality and scope of that experience is comparable."
- Led with the most impressive and relevant examples of my work, presented quantitatively
- Found a connection at the company on LinkedIn and asked if they would be willing to refer me internally

In the interview:
They asked about the experience gap once. I gave the same prepared answer, quality over quantity, with specific examples. They moved on.

The lesson: Experience requirements are negotiated. Companies describe the ideal candidate, not the minimum viable one. If you can do the job, the number of years is often a proxy that can be overcome with evidence.

The remote-first job sites worth knowing: Remote.co, We Work Remotely, and Remotive. Combined with standard Malaysian sites, you have access to global roles from Malaysia.

Remote international work while based in Malaysia: the tax implications are complex. Whether you owe taxes in both countries depends on tax treaties. Get professional advice.

USD-denominated remote roles + Malaysia cost of living = financial freedom significantly faster than domestic employment. Worth navigating the complexity.
