Personal branding for introverts who hate networking — strategies that actually work

by Rina Bakri·May 23, 2026

I'm introverted and find most "networking" advice exhausting and performative. Here's what's worked for me to be visible without being extroverted.

Content over conversation:
Writing publicly about things I know well creates inbound attention without requiring me to work a room. Specific LinkedIn posts about things I've actually learned generate more meaningful connections than 10 networking events.

Depth over breadth:
Instead of meeting 50 people superficially, I prioritise 5 genuine relationships. These lead to more referrals and opportunities than a large, shallow network.

One-on-one over groups:
Coffee with one person is fine. Conference networking is painful. I focus my energy on the format that works for me.

Async contribution:
Answering questions in professional Slack groups, LinkedIn comments, and community forums. You build a reputation without in-person performance.

The insight: Visibility doesn't require extroversion. It requires consistency and specificity. Show up in the same place with the same expertise repeatedly and people find you.

The cover letter is dead for most companies. The personalised note when applying via LinkedIn InMail is alive. Know which format each employer prefers.

Short cover letters — 3 paragraphs — get read. Long ones get skimmed. A hiring manager with 100 applications gives your cover letter 45 seconds. Make every sentence count.

Proofread cover letters with a fresh eye after an hour away from it. Typos in a cover letter for a communications role are disqualifying. It signals how you work.
