The hidden job market in Malaysia — how to access roles that are never posted

by Hakim Zawawi·May 22, 2026

Estimates vary, but a significant proportion of roles (especially senior ones) are filled before or without ever being publicly advertised. Here's how to access them.

Why it exists:
- Hiring is expensive and time-consuming. If a manager can fill a role through their network, they often do.
- Senior roles especially, companies don't want competitors to know they're searching at that level

How to access it:

1. Network with intention. Don't wait to need a job to build a network. Have coffees with people in roles or companies you're interested in, with no agenda. When a role opens, they think of you.

2. Talk to executive recruiters (headhunters). Even if they don't have a current role, getting on their radar means they call you when something comes up. This is especially true for mid-senior roles.

3. Reach out directly to managers (not HR). A genuine LinkedIn message to a hiring manager about an area you're both interested in, with no immediate ask, plants a seed.

4. Be visible in your industry. Speaking at events, writing publicly, or contributing to professional communities puts you in the view of people who hire.

I prepared questions about team structure, decision-making process, and learning culture. These questions got me better information and visibly impressed the panel.

"What keeps you here?" asked of a long-tenured interviewer tells you more about the real culture than any prepared company talking point.

Prepare 7—10 questions and ask the 3—4 that come up naturally in conversation. Pre-scripted questions that have already been answered look like you weren't listening.
