Payment methods and platform fees for Malaysian freelancers — comparison
by Erna Ismail·May 22, 2026
Managing how you get paid matters more than most freelancers realise. Here's what I've found.
For local Malaysian clients:
- Bank transfer (FPX) is simplest, zero fees, instant, familiar to everyone
- Invoice with your local account details. Clients can pay via IBG or instant transfer
For international clients:
- Wise (TransferWise): best exchange rates, flat fees, receives USD/GBP/EUR and converts to MYR well
- Paypal: widely accepted by international platforms but fees are high (2.9% + RM1.30 per transaction) and exchange rates are unfavourable
- Direct bank wire: some clients prefer this for large amounts. Your bank's international transfer fees apply
Platform fees to know:
- Upwork: 20% on first RM600 with each client, reducing to 10% then 5% as relationship grows
- Fiverr: flat 20% on all earnings
- Gumroad: flat 10% + payment processing fees
Wise for international clients is the clear recommendation. The difference between Wise rates and Paypal rates on a USD1,000 payment can be RM50—80.
