How to ask for an internship extension — what I did and what happened

by Alif Hazwan·May 22, 2026

Was on a 3-month internship and wanted to stay 2 more months.

Step 1: Raised it with my direct supervisor first, not HR. If your supervisor supports the extension, the HR conversation becomes a formality.

What I said: "I've really valued the work here and feel like I'm just hitting my stride. Would the team benefit from having me stay for another 6—8 weeks? I'm flexible on timing."

Frame it as value for them, not a request for yourself.

Outcome: Got a 6-week extension and was eventually converted to part-time while finishing my degree.

If the answer is no: Ask what the decision was based on. Budget? Headcount? Role need? The answer tells you something useful and shows you're thinking professionally.

HRD Corp funded an entire AWS certification cohort at my company. Zero cost to us. Most companies leave this money on the table every year.

HRD Corp registered providers vary wildly in quality. Get references from other companies who've used the provider before committing the claim.

The eTRiS portal for HRD Corp claims is still painful to use. Hopefully the digital transformation improves the UX. The money is good but the process needs work.
