MDEC internship programme — honest review from a 2024 participant

by Radzuan Ali·May 21, 2026

Applied through the MDEC Internship programme for tech students.

Key thing to understand: MDEC places interns with partner companies, you don't work at MDEC itself. The quality of your experience depends entirely on which partner company you're placed with.

My placement: A mid-size Malaysian tech company. Work was genuine, I contributed to a mobile app sprint. The MDEC programme added orientation sessions and networking events that were moderately useful.

Stipend: Subsidised by MDEC, so partner companies are more willing to take interns. Monthly allowance typically RM800—1,200.

Is it worth it? If your placement company is good: yes. If weak: mediocre internship regardless of the programme name.

Do your research on the partner companies before applying.

MaGIC accelerator alumni I know are mixed on the value. Cohort quality and mentor access vary by year. Research the specific cohort before applying.

Cradle CIP funding is real money if you're in tech. The application is rigorous but the non-dilutive grant structure is worth the effort if you qualify.

MDV, Cradle, MOSTI grants, know which fits your stage. Pre-revenue companies should look at Cradle. Revenue-generating companies should look at MOSTI and MDV.
