KL company WFH changing, moving back to Penang
by Khor Wei Jian·August 24, 2026
My company in KL is rolling back WFH. I've been working from home for almost 2 years now and planning to move back to Penang to be with family.
I'm a marketing executive, been with this company for 3 years, earning RM6,500. My manager just announced we need to start coming into the office 2 days a week from next month, eventually aiming for 3 days. My parents are getting older and i've always wanted to settle down in Penang, the cost of living there is also a big factor for me.
My dilemma now is whether to try and negotiate for full remote from Penang or start looking for new roles altogether. i'm worried about:
- Burning bridges if I push too hard with my current company, especially since they're firm on hybrid.
- Finding another fully remote job with similar pay in Penang, especially in my field. The job market for full remote positions seems tougher now, and I dont want to take a pay cut.
For those who managed to go fully remote from a different state, how did you approach it? Or is it better to just start job hunting for a new remote role in Penang?
