The case for a Johor-based job today rests on lower living costs and a shorter commute than crossing the Causeway every day, rather than on higher pay. That may change as JS-SEZ projects start hiring. For married professionals with children, this trade-off is incredibly attractive.
3. The Future of Cross-Border Hybrid Work
Once the RTS Link opens, cross-border hybrid contracts may become more practical.
For example, a developer could be employed by an entity in Singapore (earning SGD), but their contract stipulates they only need to be at the Marina Bay office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The rest of the week, they work out of a dedicated JS-SEZ tech hub in Iskandar Puteri.
Check the tax, EPF and employment-law position carefully before accepting a cross-border arrangement, since it depends on where you are employed and where you work.
