How I negotiated a 30% salary jump without a single competing offer

by Airlina Mohd·May 22, 2026

People always say you need an offer letter to negotiate. I didn't have one. Here's what I did instead.

Step 1: Built the data case. Pulled salary data from JobStreet, LinkedIn Salary, and conversations with recruiters. Compiled a clear picture of market rate for my role and level.

Step 2: Documented my value. Listed every project I led, every revenue impact I contributed to, and every additional scope I had taken on since my last review.

Step 3: Requested a meeting specifically to discuss compensation — not buried in a performance review. Treated it as a business conversation.

Step 4: Named a number. Asked for 28% above my current salary. They came back at 22%. I accepted 25% after one more exchange.

Total time from first conversation to new offer letter: 3 weeks. No external offer required.

Video interview lighting hack: sit facing a window or use a ring light. Grainy dark video makes a bad first impression even before you speak.

Test your mic and camera 30 minutes before, not 2 minutes. Buffer for tech issues. Then go do something calm before the interview starts.
