SOCSO and EIS benefits in Malaysia โ€” most employees are missing out

by Kamarul AriffยทMay 23, 2026

I genuinely didn't understand what I was entitled to until I went through a job loss last year. Sharing what I learned the hard way.

SOCSO (PERKESO):
- Employment Injury Scheme: covers accidents at work and occupational diseases
- Invalidity Pension Scheme: covers permanent disability or death not work-related
- Most employees think SOCSO only covers workplace accidents โ€” not true

EIS (Employment Insurance System):
- If you're retrenched (not resigned), you can claim up to 80% of your last salary for 3โ€“6 months depending on contribution period
- Job search allowance, early re-employment allowance, and reduced income allowance are also available
- You must apply within 60 days of losing your job โ€” the clock starts ticking immediately

Check your contribution history on the PERKESO portal. I found mine had errors that would have reduced my claim.

Negotiating after an offer is not rude. It's expected. The company left room for negotiation in their first offer รƒยขรขโ€šยฌโ€ that's how it works.

The "what's your current salary?" question is a trap. In Malaysia it's not illegal to decline answering. Redirect to your expected salary.

I got RM 2,000 more by saying "I have a competing offer at that range." True or not, it anchors the conversation. Know your leverage.
