Zakat deduction on your salary โ€” common mistakes Malaysian Muslims makE

by Hafizul RahmanยทMay 19, 2026

This is not financial advice, check with your state religious authority for specifics. But here are errors I see repeatedly.

Mistake 1: Not claiming zakat at all because the process seems complicated. Your employer can actually deduct zakat directly if you elect it, this reduces your PCB (tax withholding) simultaneously.

Mistake 2: Calculating zakat on gross income. Zakat on employment income is typically calculated on net income after deducting EPF and personal allowable expenses. Not gross.

Mistake 3: Missing the zakat fitrah vs zakat pendapatan distinction. Many people pay fitrah (which is minimal) and assume that covers their zakat obligation on income. It doesn't.

Mistake 4: Forgetting that zakat paid is a ringgit-for-ringgit tax rebate in Malaysia, so if you owe RM1,200 in zakat, that's RM1,200 off your income tax bill directly.

Coding assessments on HackerRank feel artificial. I've found they correlate poorly with actual job performance in my experience hiring.

I prefer whiteboard or paired coding over timed platforms. Less pressure, more signal on how someone thinks and communicates.

The best technical screen I had was a 30-minute code review of real production code from their repo. Felt like actual work, not a puzzle.
