I asked for a mid-year salary review and got it — herE's the exact approach

by Ika Norashikin·May 25, 2026

Context: joined at a lower rate than I should have because I didn't negotiate well. Six months in, had built a track record and wanted to correct it.

What I said (rough script):
"I wanted to request some time to discuss my compensation. When I joined, I accepted the initial offer without fully understanding the market rate for this role. Since then I've [specific achievements]. I've done some research and the market range for my role and experience is [X to Y]. I'd like to discuss aligning my salary to [Z]."

Key moves:
- Framed it as alignment, not a demand
- Led with contributions, not needs
- Named a specific number
- Did not apologise for asking

Result: Got 80% of what I asked for after one conversation. The manager said it was refreshing to have someone come in with data rather than just a feeling.

The loneliness is the part no one warns you about in remote work. I set up virtual coworking sessions with friends in other companies. Helps a lot.

I joined a coworking space two days a week and the social battery recharged. Remote-friendly doesn't mean you have to work from home exclusively.

Online team coffees — no agenda, just chat for 15 minutes — replicated the watercooler more than I expected. It has to be protected from becoming a meeting.
